Herbs and Spices – An Ayurvedic Introduction

Join Kelli Etheridge of Stir Cooking School for this interesting introduction to Herbs and Spices and their beneficial effects upon digestion according the Ayurvedic doshas! In this beginner workshop a variety of herbs and spices, including their forms and culinary uses will be explored. You will learn how herbs and spices can affect your digestion, your overall health and how they relate to the Ayurvedic doshas. Spice combinations will be recommended for exploration beyond the workshop.

Samples of the following dishes will be provided:

  • A Chai Tea
  • A Garam Masala
  • Cilantro/Mint Chutney
  • A Dry Sesame Chutney
  • Tumeric/Ginger Chutney
  • (Bonus: Take home your own jar of garam masala!)

During this workshop we will also explore the myriad of health benefits of a couple of very effective traditional Ayurvedic herbs: Ashwaghanda and Shatavari.

This workshop will run on Saturday November 7th from 10:30am to 12:30pm at the Red Door Yoga Studio. There is an early-bird deadline for this workshop of October 23rd ($45 + GST). After October 23rd however, the regular fee ($55 + GST) will apply.

Cooking for Balance – the Ayurvedic Way

We will explore the role of the 6 tastes used to balance the doshas and learn about what tastes combine to make a satisfying meal. Throughout the class we will also discuss healthy eating routines for improved energy and digestion. You will come away with recipes for your body type and some great tips and tricks for maintaining daily energy levels! Menu: a main dish for each of the three doshas as well as a tri-doshic recipe. Simple snack and drink recipes will also be included.

This lecture component of this workshop will run on Sunday June 28th from 8:30am to 11:30am at the Red Door Yoga Studio with Kavita Maharaj, while the cooking class component will run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm at Costin Hall in Lantzville with Kelli Etheridge and Jennifer Leslie of Stir Cooking School.  There is an early-bird deadline for this workshop of June 12th ($99 + GST). After June 12th however, the regular fee of $110 + GST will apply.

Ayurveda is the basis for every other medical system in the world today. It is the scientific exploration of the relationship between our bodies and the world around us. This workshop will teach you about the Ayurvedic system of living for health and balance in an easy-to-access way (8:30am to 11:30am), while providing you with a 4-hour cooking class component to put these principles into practice (12:30pm to 4:30pm)!
